Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has announced his intention to carry out “selective” mobilization of units within the Belarusian army in preparation for possible hostilities. According to him, the army must be ready for war, even despite Minsk’s statements about its commitment to peace.

Alexander Lukashenko made these remarks during a meeting with Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin on May 12, according to the Belta news agency.

Lukashenko stated that the Belarusian army must be ready to engage in combat operations if necessary.

“We will selectively mobilize units and the armed forces to prepare them for war. God willing, we will be able to avoid it. After all, we are all preparing for war,” Lukashenko said.

He also stated that a large-scale inspection of the Armed Forces was conducted in Belarus, which revealed a number of shortcomings.

Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin stated that Belarus plans to allocate “significant funds” to the Armed Forces as part of the state armament program for 2026–2030.
