American costume designer Bob Mackie, known for his long-running collaboration with Cher and other stars, died on September 14 at the age of 87. Over the course of his career, he won nine Emmy Awards, a Tony Award and was nominated for an Oscar three times.

“He lived his 87 years to the fullest, fulfilling his dream of being a fashion and costume designer — which is all he ever wanted to do. His genius and extraordinary designs will live on forever, continuing to bring beauty into this world,” the designer’s team said on Instagram.
Bob Mackie was one of Hollywood’s best-known costume designers. He worked with Cher, Carol Burnett, Tina Turner, Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, Liza Minnelli, Ann-Margret and Bette Midler.
One of his first major jobs was creating costumes for “The Carol Burnett Show”, which ran from 1967 to 1978. It was on the set of that show that Mackie met Cher, and he later became the costume designer for “The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour”.
Mackie’s collaboration with Cher became one of the best known of his career. Among other things, he created a look for her featuring a large feathered headpiece, which the singer wore to the Oscars in 1986.
Over the course of his career, Mackie was nominated for an Emmy 32 times and won the award nine times. In 2002, he was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame, and he was also nominated for an Oscar three times for his work on the films “Lady Sings the Blues”, “Funny Lady” and “Pennies from Heaven”.
Mackie won his only Tony Award for his work on the 2018 musical “The Cher Show”, for which he created more than 450 costumes.
