Latvian troops stopped an attempt to illegally cross the state border from Belarus. On October 6, people accompanying a group of 20 illegal migrants were armed and threatened military personnel.
Latvian Interior Minister Jānis Dombrava said this on X.
According to him, the incident differed from many previous cases because of particularly demonstrative and aggressive behaviour.
“The escorts of the illegal migrants, who were on the Belarusian side, were armed, threatened members of the Armed Forces, and actively encouraged and drove the group of migrants toward Latvia,” Dombrava wrote.
Several hours after the incident, masked people entered Latvian territory, damaged an electrical distribution cabinet and stole cameras.
According to Dombrava, they returned to Belarusian territory before a border guard patrol arrived.
“Belarus should understand that such incidents may lead to more serious consequences for Belarus itself,” he said.
