Today, May 25, Kyiv marks City Day — one of the most cherished holidays for all who love the Ukrainian capital. It is a time to honor the city’s centuries-old history, its rich culture, strength, and beauty. However, this year’s celebration is overshadowed by yet another Russian attack that once again reminded everyone: the war is far from over, and Kyiv remains a target.

During the night of May 25, Russian forces launched a strike on Kyiv and the surrounding region. Several districts in the capital suffered damage. In the Holosiivskyi district, a fire broke out on the facade of a five-story dormitory; in the Dniprovskyi district, a private home was damaged; and in the Shevchenkivskyi district, a residential building was affected. A total of nine people were injured in the capital, including women and elderly residents.

The situation was even more tragic in the Kyiv region: at least four people were killed, including one child, and 16 others were injured. Explosions destroyed residential buildings, sparked fires, and prompted a large-scale emergency response.

Despite the pain and losses, Kyiv continues to live. A city that has withstood many invaders throughout its history once again shows its resilience and dignity. On City Day, residents are not only reflecting on Kyiv’s past but also proving to the world that even in the darkest times, the spirit of this city cannot be broken.

Today’s celebration is not about loud concerts or mass gatherings. It is a quiet but firm declaration that Kyiv will endure. It is a day of gratitude to those who defend the city — on the frontlines and in the rear, those who save lives, clear rubble, and assist the injured. Kyiv is its people. And that means this city lives — and will continue to live.
