The Kremlin expects Serbia’s new government to continue cooperating with Russia following Aleksandar Vucic’s defeat in the parliamentary election. Moscow said it was ready to further develop relations with Belgrade and expressed hope that the election winners would see such cooperation as beneficial to their country.
This was reported by the Russian propaganda news agency “Interfax”.
According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Russia hopes that the new political force coming to power in Serbia will continue developing relations with Moscow.
“As for the new political force that will come to power as a result of the elections, we would like to express hope that its actions will be constructively aimed at further developing relations and that this new political force will understand that cooperation with Russia is in Serbia’s interests, because it primarily benefits Serbia,” Peskov said.
He assured reporters that Moscow intended to continue supporting the development of relations with Belgrade.
“But, as you know, it takes two to tango,” the Kremlin spokesman added.
Jovo Bakic, a representative of the Student List party, has already said that Serbia’s future government does not plan to impose sanctions on Russia.
“We are not here to please foreigners, but to act in our national interests,” Bakic said in response to a question about the EU’s demand that Serbia stop importing Russian energy resources.
Earlier, Reuters reported that following their parliamentary election victory, representatives of the Student List had announced plans to halt all Serbian arms exports to conflict zones, including sales to Western intermediaries who supply weapons to Ukraine.
