On 21 October, India returned 85 of its citizens who had been fraudulently recruited into the Russian army to participate in the war against Ukraine.
This was reported by the Hindustan Times.
Indian Foreign Minister Vikram Misra said that the government is in ‘very close contact’ with the Russian foreign and defence ministries to resolve the situation of Indians who were recruited into the Russian army.
Misra also said that India has already returned the bodies of some of its citizens who were killed in the fighting. According to him, approximately 20 people still remain in the Russian army, and India is actively working to secure their release.
The issue of the release of Indian citizens is expected to be discussed during the meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the BRICS summit.
