The first stage of the Volta ao Algarve cycling race in Portugal can claim the title of the most absurd in the history of the race. Most of the cyclists did not notice the turn at the finish line and mistakenly went around it, ending up off the track.
Of all the participants, only Italian Filippo Anna did not make a mistake and crossed the finish line first. However, his victory was short-lived: the board of commissioners of the Volta ao Algarve decided to cancel the first stage.
“The commissioners assessed the situation and decided to cancel the stage because they felt that sporting justice had not been achieved,” said Sérgio Souza, director of Volta ao Algarve.
