The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has reported that its monitoring team at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) heard several rounds of incoming and outgoing shelling in close proximity to the facility.
The agency warned that the ongoing shelling heightens the risks to nuclear safety at Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, which has been operating without off-site power for nearly two weeks. In this state, the plant’s essential cooling and safety systems are being powered by emergency diesel generators.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stated that continued attacks near the facility “add to the risks for nuclear safety at a site that has already been in critical conditions for more than ten days.”
As a reminder, Ukraine has expressed its readiness to repair the backup power line, subject to security guarantees from the Russian military.
