On 2 May 2025, Ukrainian soldiers destroyed a combat aircraft using a marine drone for the first time in world history in the Black Sea. This was reported by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine (GUR).
The Special Forces Group 13 of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, in cooperation with the Security Service of Ukraine and the Defence Forces, struck a Russian Su-30 multi-role fighter jet with a missile launched from the Magura sea drone platform. The enemy aircraft, estimated to be worth about $50 million, was destroyed in the air and fell into the sea near the port of Novorossiysk.
This strike was the first confirmed destruction of a combat aircraft by a naval drone in the world.
On 31 December 2024, the Magura V5 unmanned naval vehicle had already demonstrated its effectiveness when two Russian Mi-8 helicopters were destroyed.
The GUR thanked everyone who is helping in the production of Magura strike drones, including volunteers, philanthropists, journalists and every Ukrainian who supports the defence forces.
