Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine is losing the United States as a strong partner, but that this is not Ukraine’s fault. He also described Elon Musk’s decision regarding Starlink as a major mistake, warned that people could die and called for the system’s operation to be restored.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy made the remarks in an interview with British journalist Piers Morgan.
During the conversation, the president expressed regret over deteriorating relations with the United States. Asked by Morgan whether he believed Ukraine was losing America, Zelenskyy said yes, but stressed that Ukraine was not to blame and could not afford to be weak. He also emphasised that Ukraine’s future was not a matter of commercial negotiations.
“We are not selling our country. Look, guys, it’s not about business for us. It’s our lives. It’s our country, our home, our children,” Zelenskyy said.
Speaking about Donald Trump’s position, Zelenskyy said the US president’s advisers were wrong and that someone around him was pushing the American leader towards the wrong side.
“If you’re in the middle, you have to stay in the middle, not on the wrong side. I think Trump’s advisers are wrong. I don’t know who is pushing him to the wrong side. This is not the right side of history,” Zelenskyy said.
Another topic of the interview was the restrictions on Starlink. Asked by Morgan about Elon Musk’s decision, Zelenskyy called it a big mistake. When the journalist asked whether people could die because of the decision, the president replied that people would, of course, die.
Zelenskyy also appealed directly to Musk to restore the satellite communications service.
“On Starlink, we are asking to switch it on,” the president said.
