US President Donald Trump, during his meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping at the White House, spoke about the importance of personal relations between the two countries, the development of trade dialogue and cooperation in the areas of security and technology.

Trump called Xi Jinping’s visit historic, noting that the Chinese leader became the first head of the People’s Republic of China to make a second formal state visit to the United States.
“We have forged a true friendship”
Trump said that since his first election as US president in 2016, he and Xi Jinping had developed a “true friendship” based on mutual respect and the vital interests of the peoples of both countries.
According to the US president, they have met around the world — from Germany and Argentina to Japan, South Korea and China.
At the same time, Trump emphasized that this was their first meeting together at the White House.
“As President Xi has already seen, a lot has changed since he was last here,” Trump said.
Trade relations between the US and China
Trump separately highlighted progress in trade relations between the two countries.
According to the US president, he and Xi Jinping have made significant progress in addressing issues affecting the United States and China.
He also recalled the creation of a new mechanism — the Board of Trade — during his previous visit in May.
Trump said the format had become a “brand new mechanism” through which teams from both countries are working to encourage a more balanced trading relationship.
Security, technology and artificial intelligence
Trump said that during the current visit the sides would also discuss issues related to security, technology and superintelligence (SI).
According to him, decisions made by the United States and China in these areas could influence peace and prosperity for decades to come.
“The decisions we make in these areas today can promote peace and prosperity for decades and decades to come,” the US president said.
Shared history of the US and China
Trump also referred to the history of cooperation between the two countries, recalling the role of the United States and China during World War II.
He said that throughout history, common interests had connected the peoples of both countries across vast distances and differences, and had even made them allies during World War II.
Trump specifically mentioned American volunteers who came to China and fought for its survival as part of the “Flying Tigers” group.
According to him, those pilots made an “unbelievable contribution” during the war.
The meaning of “gung-ho”
Trump also spoke about the history of the phrase “gung-ho”, which is used by the US Marine Corps as an expression of great enthusiasm.
According to him, the phrase originated after encounters between US Marines and the Chinese people.
Trump noted that in Chinese it literally means “working together”.
“We will continue working together”
At the end of his remarks, Trump said that the United States and China could achieve a great deal through cooperation.
He stressed that just as the peoples of both countries worked together during World War II, he and Xi Jinping would continue working together to build a better future for both nations.
“President Xi, Madam Peng — thank you once again for making this historic visit and welcome to the U.S.A.,” Trump said.
