The Security Service of Ukraine has documented six more cases in which Russia allegedly used depleted uranium munitions during attacks on the Chernihiv region. The hazardous components were found in Geran-2 attack drones used between April and June 2026.

According to the investigation, Russian forces use radioactive elements in R-60M missiles adapted for deployment on unmanned aerial vehicles.
During inspections of Russian drone impact sites and radiological examinations of their warheads, an investigative team and specialists from Ukraine’s State Emergency Service recorded radiation levels 80 times higher than the natural background level.
Gamma radiation from individual fragments ranged from 8.3 to 24 microsieverts per hour, while the permitted sanitary limit is 0.3 microsieverts per hour.
An examination initiated by the SBU found that the missile warheads contained nuclear material identified as uranium-235 and uranium-238.
The presence of radioactive components was confirmed using dosimetry equipment and a mobile automated radiological system.
After the munitions were discovered and examined, measures were taken to neutralize them and protect the public.
SBU investigators opened criminal proceedings under Article 438 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code, concerning war crimes.
The SBU urged residents not to approach, touch or move fragments of drones, missiles or other munitions. Hazardous discoveries should be reported to the SBU at 1516, the State Emergency Service at 101 or the National Police at 102.
The investigation is continuing under the procedural supervision of the Chernihiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
