The UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution proposed by Ukraine and the EU to mark the third anniversary of Russia’s war against Ukraine, entitled “Promoting a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine.”
93 countries voted in favor of the resolution, 18 were against, and 65 abstained.
In the document, the General Assembly reaffirms its support for the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders. It also emphasizes that “no territorial acquisition resulting from the threat or use of force should be recognized as legal”.
Also, the General Assembly supported the draft resolution on Ukraine submitted by the USA with 89 votes in favor. Its original text did not specify that Russia was the aggressor, nor did it call on Russia to withdraw its troops from the occupied territories.

The day before, it was reported that the United States for the first time refused to co-sponsor a draft UN resolution condemning Russian aggression and supporting Ukraine.
Two FT sources said that US officials had called for the resolution, which had been drafted by Ukraine and the EU, to be withdrawn. The US government drafted its own version of the resolution, which equated Ukraine’s actions with those of Russia and expressed sorrow over the “tragic loss of life during the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.”
