On October 12, Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence Directorate (HUR) released data on the design of Russia’s Kh-47M2 Kinzhal aeroballistic missile and the companies involved in its production. According to Ukrainian intelligence, 22 of the 58 companies participating in the production chain are still not under sanctions from any country in the sanctions coalition.

        This was reported by HUR.

On the War&Sanctions portal, Ukrainian intelligence published an interactive 3D model of the 9-S-7760 missile, better known as the Kh-47M2 Kinzhal, along with information about its components and manufacturers.

According to HUR, the Kinzhal is a single-stage solid-fuel missile with an integrated warhead. About 90% of its components are unified with the 9M723 ballistic missile used by the Iskander-M system.

Among the main differences, intelligence points to a tail aerodynamic fairing that separates after the engine starts, a radar seeker and an active jamming system. The missile is also equipped with an S-200 decoy deployment system.

Russia is working on a new warhead

According to HUR, the Kinzhal can currently be equipped with two types of warheads — a penetrating high-explosive warhead in a thick metal casing and a special nuclear warhead.

At the same time, Russia is working on a modification with a high-explosive fragmentation warhead.

Ukrainian intelligence suggests that this change may be linked to problems with the missile’s guidance accuracy, as high precision is especially important for a penetrating warhead.

        Russia has cut Kinzhal orders

According to HUR, in 2026 Russia significantly reduced the volume of state defense orders for Kinzhal missiles, redirecting production capacity, components and raw materials toward the manufacture of 9M723 Iskander-M ballistic missiles.

Another reason cited by intelligence is the limited service life of Kinzhal carrier aircraft — MiG-31I interceptor fighters and their MiG-31K predecessors. Russia’s aviation industry does not currently produce these aircraft.

HUR also released information on 58 Russian enterprises involved in the production chain for the Kh-47M2 Kinzhal. Of these, 22 are still not subject to sanctions by any country in the sanctions coalition, according to Ukrainian intelligence.

HUR called for sanctions against all companies involved in the production of these missiles to be synchronized and for tighter controls on technologies used by Russia.
