Ukrainian forces struck two Russian radar systems — the Irbis and the 55Zh6U Nebo-U. The latter was hit overnight on October 16 in Russia’s Krasnodar region, after which a fire broke out near the radar site.
This was reported by Ukraine’s Interior Ministry and the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
According to the Interior Ministry, aerial reconnaissance from the Khyzhaky brigade detected a Russian mobile Irbis radar mounted on a KamAZ chassis.
Operators of Baton strike UAVs attacked the radar and hit it on their first attempt.
A passenger vehicle later approached the damaged system, apparently carrying a Russian repair team. Ukrainian forces returned and struck the target again, hitting both the radar and the vehicle.
The Interior Ministry said the Irbis radar is worth millions of dollars.
Separately, the General Staff reported a strike on a 55Zh6U Nebo-U radar station.
The strike was carried out overnight on October 16 near the settlement of Magri in Russia’s Krasnodar region. A fire broke out in the area of the facility following the attack.
The Nebo-U is a long-range, three-dimensional VHF radar designed to detect and track aerial targets, including aircraft, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles.
According to the General Staff, the estimated cost of such a radar is around $100 million.
The General Staff said that damaging such radar systems reduces the Russian military’s ability to monitor airspace and detect aerial targets in a timely manner.
