“The Łódź Military District Command is investigating an incident involving a small UAV that crashed on February 6 on the territory of the 1st Air Cavalry Battalion in Leżnica Wielka without causing any damage,” the Polish military police reported.
Law enforcement officers detained the drone operator, who turned out to be a 22-year-old Polish citizen.
“As it turned out, a small commercially available drone fell on the territory of the unit after getting caught on a tree,” the military police emphasized.
The man has been charged with violating air law, and the reasons for the drone’s appearance over military territory are being investigated by the relevant services. The military gendarmerie reminded that the use of drones over military facilities is a crime and can be punished by imprisonment for up to five years. The Military Counterintelligence Service is also involved in the case.
This is not the first such incident in recent times: on January 28, in Pszczyna, Mazovia, a drone was also recorded falling on the territory of a military unit, in which case it was a toy drone without a memory card or SIM card.
The 1st Aviation Division and the 1st Air Cavalry Battalion of the 25th Air Cavalry Brigade are stationed in Leżnica Wielka near Łęczyca. It is one of the largest military airfields in Poland and a base for Army helicopters, providing air assault capabilities.
