Astronomers report that on the nights of October 6–7 and 7–8, skywatchers will be able to witness a rare event when the full moon coincides with the Moon’s closest approach to Earth — a phenomenon known as a supermoon or perigee full moon. The event is described by Star Walk.

A supermoon occurs when the Moon is at its perigee, the point in its orbit closest to Earth. At that time, it appears 6–7% larger and up to 13% brighter than during a typical full moon.

This October full moon is also known as the Hunter’s Moon — traditionally the first full moon after the autumn equinox. This year’s Hunter’s Moon coincides with the Moon’s closest point to Earth, making it appear exceptionally large and luminous in the night sky.

        How and When to Watch

The best time to observe the supermoon will be in the eastern sky just after sunset or before dawn, when it appears largest due to the horizon illusion. Astronomers recommend choosing dark locations away from city lights to enjoy the spectacle in full.

The October supermoon will be one of the brightest of 2025 and the first of three consecutive supermoons, with the next ones expected in November and December.
