The Dutch Ministry of Defence reported that several drones were detected over Volkel Air Base between 19:00 and 21:00 on Friday. According to the Dutch Ministry of Defence, the drones were spotted by security personnel, and air force personnel on the ground used weapons in an attempt to bring them down. The drones left the area and were not found.
Following the sighting, the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee and the national police were notified and have launched an investigation. At this time, it remains unclear why the drones were flying over and around the air base. For security reasons, the ministry did not disclose how the drones were detected or which countermeasures were used.
The ministry reminded the public that drone use near airports is prohibited due to aviation safety risks. Around military bases and installations, such restrictions also protect operational security.
