Ukraine’s Security Service has displayed debris of a Russian “Oreshnik” ballistic missile used to strike the Lviv region overnight on January 9, describing the attack on civilian infrastructure as a war crime.

According to SBU, investigators located fragments of the Russian ballistic missile that struck the Lviv region during the night of January 8–9, 2026. Preliminary findings indicate the recovered components belong to the “Oreshnik” missile system.
The debris includes a stabilization and guidance unit, parts of the propulsion system, fragments of the orientation mechanism, and nozzles from the missile’s separation platform. All recovered items have been classified as material evidence and are being prepared for detailed forensic examinations.
The SBU said preliminary data suggest the “Oreshnik” medium-range, surface-to-surface missile was launched from Russia’s Kapustin Yar test range. The strike targeted civilian facilities in Ukraine near the European Union’s border.
Investigators have classified the use of this weapon against civilian infrastructure as a war crime committed by the Russian Federation. The SBU is currently working to establish all circumstances of the attack, as well as to identify its organizers and perpetrators for further accountability.
