An 83-year-old retired FSB major general, Igor Laptev, was found dead in Moscow. According to preliminary reports, he shot himself in his own office.

Igor Laptev’s body was discovered during the day on August 20 in a building on Verkhnyaya Krasnoselskaya Street in Moscow. He was found in his office with a gunshot wound to the head.
Laptev took part in combat operations in Afghanistan. After that, he served for a long time in the KGB and FSB, where he dealt with information security issues. In the late 1990s, he served as deputy minister for taxes and duties. Since 1998, he had chaired the board of directors of Informtekhnika i Svyaz, a company specializing in the development and production of integrated secure professional communications systems for government and corporate institutions.
The Moscow Times also recalls other cases involving the deaths of Russian generals in recent years.
In May 2026, 87-year-old Colonel General Stanislav Petrov, former head of the radiation, chemical and biological protection troops, died in Moscow. His body was found in an apartment in the House on the Embankment. RBC reported that Petrov had been seriously ill, while Gazeta.Ru wrote about a possible suicide.
In February 2023, 72-year-old police Major General Vladimir Makarov was found dead in the Moscow region. TASS reported that he had died by suicide.
In July 2022, retired FSB Major General Yevgeny Lobachev died in Moscow. According to TASS, the cause of death was suicide. A month earlier, 90-year-old retired SVR Major General Lev Sotskov was found dead in his apartment, with an award pistol lying next to his body.
