Poland’s Ministry of Defence has warned of a “very serious escalation” by Russia following attacks on western regions of Ukraine near the Polish border. Warsaw believes that the Russian strikes may not only be an attempt to damage Ukraine but also a test of NATO’s response.
The statement was made by Polish Deputy Defence Minister Cezary Tomczyk during an interview with TVN24.
According to him, Russia’s latest attacks on western Ukraine are part of a broader strategy aimed at weakening Ukraine’s defence capabilities ahead of the winter period.
“We are talking about a very serious escalation on Russia’s part,” Tomczyk said.
He noted that Russian forces have changed their tactics. While attacks previously mostly took place at night and had a limited character, Ukraine is now being kept in a state of constant combat readiness due to strikes that continue practically around the clock.
The Polish deputy defence minister stressed that attacks on western Ukraine near the border with Poland “are not a coincidence.” In his view, Russia is using them to test NATO and the possible response of its allies.
“This is testing NATO, this is testing possible allied assistance,” Tomczyk said.
He also said that Poland receives warnings from partners, including US intelligence, about possible scenarios of further escalation. According to him, the threats include cyberattacks, sabotage, an increase in hybrid warfare and provocations along the borders of NATO countries.
Tomczyk said that in cases of sabotage or suspicious incidents in Europe, especially at strategic facilities, “with almost one hundred percent certainty” a Russian trace or connection with Russia can be assumed.
At the same time, the Polish official said that there is currently no confirmed scenario of direct Russian military aggression against NATO countries.
He called for strengthening the resilience of the state, society and armed forces, as, according to him, Russia’s “escalation ladder” may continue to rise.
Tomczyk also stressed the importance of citizens responding properly to warnings during attacks. According to him, during an air threat people should follow official announcements and move to safe locations.
