Kyiv plans to build combined river crossings across the Dnipro and construct access roads, with the city expected to allocate UAH 1 billion for the project. City authorities are also working with the military on additional technical measures to protect bridges from Russian strikes.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced the plans following a meeting of the capital’s Defense Council on October 27.

According to Klitschko, the initiative to construct the new Dnipro River crossings came from the national government, which has already adopted the relevant resolution. The military command will determine the locations of the crossings, with approval to be provided by the Kyiv City Military Administration, among other authorities. At the government’s recommendation, the city is expected to secure UAH 1 billion to implement the project.

The council also discussed the safety of Kyiv’s bridges amid intensified Russian attacks on critical infrastructure.

“Specialists from the city’s relevant institutions are developing additional technical solutions to preserve the structures of bridges across the Dnipro River. We also heard proposals from the military on this issue,” Klitschko said.

The Defense Council additionally reviewed the maintenance, construction and improvement of shelters, including the installation of mobile protective shelters.

“I reiterated that in mid-October, at a Kyiv City State Administration board meeting, I instructed the heads of the capital’s districts to prioritize the use of funds for improving shelters, not to neglect the installation of mobile shelters, and to reallocate funds within the budgets assigned to their districts,” the Kyiv mayor said.
