This year’s Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to Hungarian writer László Krasznahorkai. He was recognized “for his compelling and visionary writing, which in the midst of apocalyptic horror affirms the power of art.”

This was reported on the official website of the Nobel Prize.

According to Suspilne, bookmakers mentioned László Krasznahorkai among the likely winners. Australian writer Gerald Munyne and Mexican writer Cristina Rivera Garza were also named as likely contenders.

The Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded since 1901, when prizes were also awarded in physics, chemistry, physiology, and medicine. According to Alfred Nobel’s will, the prize is awarded to the person who has created “the most outstanding work in the direction of idealism.” Only works created in the year prior to the award are considered.

The winner is selected by the Nobel Committee of the Swedish Academy, which consists of four or five people — Swedish writers, poets, scientists, and historians who are elected for a term of three years.
