The Ukrainian Defense Forces have struck an oil depot in the Smolensk region of the Russian Federation, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has confirmed.

The attack was carried out on the night of December 31 by units of the Special Operations Forces together with the Unmanned Systems Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other units of the Defense Forces.

“Powerful explosions and a fire were recorded at the facility, and there is heavy smoke. According to available information, tanks with oil products caught fire. It is known that the base was used, among other things, to supply the Russian occupation army,” the statement said.

The head of the Yartsevsky district, Roman Zakharov, previously reported a fire at the fuel base caused by drone strikes. However, he later deleted his posts and published a statement by Smolensk Region Governor Vasily Anokhin, who claimed that the fire was caused by a fuel leak after “drone debris” fell.
