BRICS summit begins in Kazan

On 22 October, the BRICS summit under the Russian presidency began in Kazan. The meeting will be attended by the heads of 22 states and delegations from 36 countries.

This was reported by Radio Liberty.

It is noted that this year Russia is chairing the BRICS for the fourth time in the organisation’s 20-year history. Dictator Vladimir Putin has already arrived in Kazan.

Russian state media are actively covering the event and emphasise that the visit of a number of leaders of major powers shows that Russia is not in international isolation because of the invasion of Ukraine.

According to Putin’s aide Yuri Ushakov, delegations from 36 countries, including 22 heads of state, as well as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, will attend the summit.

The summit is expected to be attended by the leaders of China, India, South Africa, Egypt, Turkey, Iran, and the head of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas.

According to RIA Novosti, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa have already arrived in Kazan.
