Saratov Region Governor Roman Busargin said on 12 January that the city of Engels continues to extinguish a fire that broke out at an industrial facility after a drone attack on 8 January.

‘The process of controlled fuel burnout continues. Specialists in round-the-clock mode are taking all necessary measures for liquidation,’ Busargin wrote in his Telegram channel after a meeting of the operational headquarters working at the site of the fire.

The governor noted that ‘the amount of smoke, as well as the area of the fire, is decreasing.’ On 11 January, Busargin said that the area of the fire at the plant had been reduced by 80%.

Local residents had earlier complained about air pollution. At the same time, the governor said that air samples taken at the site of the fire did not reveal excessive concentrations of harmful substances.

Drones attacked Engels in the Saratov Region on the night of 8 January. One of the industrial enterprises was damaged, the region’s governor said. According to Russian media, there was a fire at the oil depot of Rosreserva’s Kristall combine. An emergency regime is in effect in Engels.

It is here that the Russian military airbase is located, from where Tu-95MS (‘Bear’) with their cruise missiles take off to strike Ukraine.
