President Zelenskyy reported on his conversation with Erdogan and supported Trump’s initiative for a ceasefire and direct talks with Putin on May 15 in Istanbul. Ukraine is ready for the meeting in Turkey and expects the US to play an active role.
This was announced by Volodymyr Zelenskyy on May 12.
According to the Ukrainian leader, he and the Turkish president discussed key details of the negotiations that could help end the war with Russia.
Zelenskyy thanked Erdogan for his support and willingness to facilitate the diplomatic process. The presidents agreed on the need for a ceasefire and the importance of international monitoring of its observance. Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine’s readiness for direct talks with Vladimir Putin and stressed that Europe and the US must act together for long-term security.
Earlier, Zelenskyy commented on US President Donald Trump’s statement about possible participation in the negotiations.
“I have just heard President Trump’s statement. These are very important words. I supported Donald Trump’s idea of a complete and unconditional ceasefire – long enough to give diplomacy a chance. And we want this, we are ready to ensure silence on our part,“ he said.
Zelenskyy also said he supported Trump’s proposal for direct talks with Putin.
“I have openly said that I am ready for a meeting. I will be in Turkey. I hope that the Russians will not avoid this meeting,” the president added.
In addition, he expressed hope that Trump himself would be able to join the meeting.
“This is the right idea. We can change a lot. President Erdogan can indeed accept a meeting at the highest level,” Zelenskyy wrote.
