Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov has arrived in Miami for a series of meetings with U.S. representatives amid stalled negotiations on ending Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Reuters reported this on Thursday.
According to the agency, Umerov is expected to discuss a possible new prisoner-of-war exchange and efforts to intensify diplomatic negotiations aimed at ending the war.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that the NSDC secretary would hold several meetings with representatives of the U.S. president.
According to Zelenskyy, the key topics of the talks will include humanitarian issues, the diplomatic process, and security cooperation with the United States.
The president said Ukraine remains in constant communication with the American side and is aware of contacts between partners and Russia.
At the same time, Zelenskyy stated that Russia “is not showing any constructive approach” even regarding a ceasefire regime.
Reuters writes that U.S.-brokered negotiations have effectively reached a deadlock over the situation in the Donetsk region. Moscow demands that Kyiv withdraw troops from parts of the region Russia has failed to fully capture, while Ukraine refuses to cede territories under its control.
The agency also noted that Washington’s attention has recently shifted significantly from Ukraine to the war in Iran.
Separately, Zelenskyy said he discussed cooperation with European partners on Drone Deals with Umerov, as well as preparations for new agreements in the fields of technology and security.
