Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called on Russia to end the war and agree to a ceasefire during a high-level meeting of the UN Security Council. He also said Russian aggression poses a global threat and argued that Russia should be removed from the UN Security Council.
This was reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
“Enough speeches. Enough broken promises. Enough imitation of diplomacy. This war must end. Ukraine wants to end it now — not later,” Sybiha said.
According to the minister, 14 of the 15 members of the UN Security Council support a ceasefire, while Russia remains the only country blocking it.
“Russia is vetoing not only a ceasefire. Russia is vetoing peace,” the foreign minister stressed.
Sybiha also warned that the consequences of Russian aggression extend far beyond Ukraine and Europe.
“This is not a Ukrainian war. And not even a European one. This is a global threat. Preventing the worst-case scenario depends on everyone in this room — and far beyond it,” he said.
The minister also drew particular attention to the situation in the temporarily occupied city of Oleshky in Kherson region. He urged the international community to demand that Russia open humanitarian corridors.
“If you remember only one thing from this meeting — remember Oleshky. Hear their cry for help. Demand that Russia open humanitarian corridors,” Sybiha said.
The foreign minister also stated that Russia is illegally occupying the former Soviet Union’s seat on the UN Security Council and called for the aggressor state to be removed from the body.
Commenting on the Russian representative’s remarks, Sybiha said he had listed numerous reasons for continuing the war and blamed Ukraine, the United States, the West and NATO, but did not place responsibility on Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Earlier, the Foreign Ministry said that during the high-level week of the UN General Assembly, the Ukrainian delegation planned to pay particular attention to the situation in occupied Oleshky and seek humanitarian access to the city.
