On September 15, train traffic across a significant part of the Netherlands was seriously disrupted due to failures in the safety system. Pipes and other materials that may have been deliberately placed were found on several sections of the railway.

The problems began at around 5:30 a.m. Safety system failures occurred at at least 20 different locations, making it impossible to reliably determine whether a train was occupying a particular section of track.
Police said foreign objects were found on the tracks at several locations in the eastern Netherlands. Law enforcement officers are investigating how they got there.
For safety reasons, signals in such cases turn red, so train traffic is stopped or significantly restricted. On some sections, trains were only able to move at very low speed.
Connections between Utrecht and the north and east of the Netherlands were affected the most. At the same time, ProRail, the company responsible for maintaining, managing and developing the railway infrastructure, said that because of the scale of the disruption, the effects were felt across the country.
It has also not been established whether the possible sabotage is linked to the official opening of the new parliamentary year in the Netherlands, which is taking place in The Hague on Tuesday.
