Ukraine’s No. 1 tennis player Elina Svitolina has advanced to the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing. In the round of 16, the Ukrainian defeated American Ann Li in straight sets — 6-2, 6-3.

At the start of the first set, Svitolina broke her opponent’s serve twice to take a 4-1 lead. Li managed to reduce the deficit by only one game before the Ukrainian closed out the set 6-2.
In the second set, Svitolina won the first four games in a row. The American responded by taking two consecutive games but was unable to change the course of the match, with the Ukrainian winning the set 6-3.
This is already the fifth WTA 1000 tournament in 2026 in which Svitolina has reached at least the quarterfinals. This season, the Ukrainian reached the semifinals in Toronto and Indian Wells, finished runner-up in Dubai and won the WTA 1000 event in Rome.
Svitolina will play in the Beijing quarterfinals for the fourth time in her career. Her best result at the tournament remains a semifinal appearance in 2016.
Her next opponent will be Chinese tennis player Zheng Qinwen, who defeated Armenia’s Alina Charaeva in another round-of-16 match.
