In qualifying, the Athens club overcame Bulgarian side Levski (0-0, 4-0) before beating Austria’s LASK 1-0 in the opening round of the league phase. Răzvan Marin scored the only goal with a free kick in the 21st minute.

In the Greek league, AEK have 14 points after six matches and sit second in the table with a goal difference of 16-3. In their most recent match on October 10, they defeated OFI 3-0.

The Athens club are coached by 47-year-old Serbian manager Marko Nikolić. Among the team’s leading stars is former Real Madrid striker Luka Jović, who has scored six goals in ten appearances this season. Hungarian forward Barnabás Varga is AEK’s top scorer so far, with eight goals.

The match will be particularly significant for Ukrainian winger Oleksandr Zubkov, who joined AEK from Turkish club Trabzonspor in the summer.

Zubkov is a product of Shakhtar’s academy and played for the Donetsk club’s first team from 2015 to 2019 and again from 2022 to 2025. He made 107 appearances for the club and won nine trophies. Since joining AEK, the Ukrainian has already scored a goal and provided an assist in a Greek Cup match against Panserraikos.

Shakhtar and AEK will meet in an official match for the first time. The Donetsk side have previously played five European matches against Greek clubs without suffering a defeat, recording one win and four draws.

AEK have played four matches against Ukrainian teams, recording one win, two draws and one defeat.

The match will be officiated by an English refereeing team led by Chris Kavanagh. Dan Cook and Ian Hussin will serve as assistant referees, while Stuart Attwell and Andrew Dallas will oversee VAR.
