Russia’s Foreign Ministry summoned the Danish ambassador and lodged a protest over the actions of a Danish Air Force helicopter near a Russian warship in the Baltic Sea. Moscow described the helicopter’s maneuvers as a violation of a UN convention and rejected accusations from Denmark.
This was reported by Russian state news agency TASS, citing the Russian Foreign Ministry.
The incident occurred on September 14 off the coast of Denmark. A Fennec military helicopter was carrying out scheduled photographic surveillance of a Russian ship that was in international waters near Gedser. euronews
According to the Danish Armed Forces, the Russian ship fired two red signal flares toward the helicopter. One of them passed in close proximity to the aircraft.
Following the incident, Denmark’s Foreign Ministry summoned the Russian ambassador. Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen called the incident “absolutely unacceptable”, while Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen described it as “reckless”.
The Russian side presented a different account. According to Russia’s Defense Ministry, the Fennec helicopter was allegedly approaching the Russian ship and did not respond to calls on the international communications channel. The commander of the Russian corvette Soobrazitelny was later awarded “for competent and decisive actions in preventing a provocation”.
Moscow has now summoned the Danish ambassador. The Russian Foreign Ministry said it considers the helicopter’s maneuvers a violation of a UN convention and described the accusations made by the Danish authorities as claims that “do not stand up to any criticism”.
