Russia could stage a provocation by launching a swarm of drones over Poland or other countries on NATO’s eastern flank bearing markings suggesting that they belong to Ukraine. Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz warned of such a threat, RMF24 reports.
According to the Polish defence minister, potential targets of such an operation could include Poland, the Baltic states, Finland and Romania.
Kosiniak-Kamysz noted that Russia had already carried out provocations involving drones, making advance warnings about possible new actions an important part of preparedness.
The Polish committee also discussed other hybrid threats posed by Russia, including GPS interference, sabotage operations, cyberattacks and the spread of disinformation.
The minister said the Polish government was countering Russian propaganda but stressed the danger of citizens spreading it themselves. He urged people to verify information sources.
Jacek Dobrzyński, spokesperson for Poland’s minister coordinating the special services, also said that Russian intelligence agencies often recruit Ukrainians, particularly young people, for sabotage activities. He referred to the case of an 18-year-old Ukrainian citizen who was charged with 47 offences related to sabotage and subversive activities.
A separate part of the meeting was devoted to the situation in Ukraine. Kosiniak-Kamysz said that, according to the chief of the Polish Armed Forces General Staff, Russia had initiated 904 combat engagements against Ukrainian forces over the past week.
The Polish defence minister also said Russia had used cruise and ballistic missiles on a scale not seen since the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022. In his view, these figures demonstrate the need to continue supporting Ukraine.
