Poland has launched a special security operation near its border with Russia’s Kaliningrad region following warnings of possible acts of sabotage in the coming days. Police, military personnel, border guards and intelligence services are involved in the operation.
This was reported by RMF FM.
According to Poland’s national police chief, Marek Boroń, the operation is being conducted in the Warmian-Masurian and Podlaskie voivodeships. A special command centre has been established at the National Police Headquarters to coordinate the security forces. Regional police headquarters in Olsztyn and Białystok are also involved.
Last week, Polish authorities received warnings from the Military Intelligence Service and intelligence agencies of allied countries about possible acts of sabotage along the border with Russia. Potential threats include armed groups crossing the border.
“This is directly related to the situation we are facing in our country today — acts of diversion, sabotage, the hybridisation of crime and the activities of eastern intelligence services,” Boroń explained.
In response to the threat, additional police units from several voivodeships have been deployed to border areas.
According to Poland’s police chief, the main task of the security forces is to ensure the safety of local residents, institutions and facilities that could be at risk.
“A large group of police officers is operating there, and some forces have been redeployed to the area. Counterterrorism units are also taking part in the operation, and we are cooperating with the military, border guards and intelligence services,” Boroń said.
He also denied that the mobilisation of security forces was in any way connected to the political crisis surrounding Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal.
