On the night of October 22, Russia used, among other weapons, three ballistic missiles with cluster warheads against Kyiv, one of which struck the capital’s Pechersk district. The attack damaged monastery buildings, residential buildings, shops, cafes and other civilian infrastructure.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said this.

According to Zelenskyy, the missiles are designed to explode in the air as they approach their target, striking an area with a radius of about 400 metres.

One of the missiles hit an area between the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra and the St. Vvedensky Monastery in Kyiv’s historic centre.

Zelenskyy said there were no military facilities nearby and argued that the choice of weapon and target area indicated a deliberate attempt to inflict maximum damage on civilians.

Air raid alerts and Russian attacks continued throughout the day in Kyiv and other regions. According to the president, a commuter train was hit in Kharkiv, while Dnipro, Marhanets, Mykolaiv and Kherson, as well as towns and villages in the Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Chernihiv and Rivne regions, also came under attack.

Zelenskyy also said that more than 170 strikes on key Ukrainian energy facilities had been recorded since October 11. At the same time, he said Ukrainian air defences had intercepted a significant share of Shahed drones and some of the missiles.

The president said Ukrainian intelligence had information about Russia’s priorities for further attacks over the coming weeks.

According to Zelenskyy, Moscow is taking advantage of delays in air defence deliveries from Ukraine’s partners, while reduced pressure on Russia only reinforces the Kremlin’s belief that it can achieve its objectives.

Zelenskyy instructed the Ministry of Defence, the military command and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to brief partners on the current threats and press for faster delivery of already agreed defence packages.
