A new diplomatic dispute between representatives of Russia and the US has erupted on social media (formerly Twitter). Commenting on Donald Trump’s statements that Putin is “playing with fire” and that “very bad things” await Russia, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev wrote:

“I know only one TRULY BAD thing — it’s World War III. I hope Trump understands that!”

This post sparked outrage among US officials. Retired Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg, Trump’s national security adviser and a key member of his election campaign, responded harshly to Medvedev:

“Threatening the world with World War III is irresponsible, reckless, and unworthy of a country that calls itself a world power. President Trump is working to stop this war and end the bloodshed.”

Kellogg also reminded Medvedev that Russia had promised to deliver a written memorandum with the terms of a ceasefire a week ago:

“We are waiting for the document you promised. The time to stop the fighting is now.”

This exchange of statements took place against the backdrop of recent shelling in Ukraine and attempts by Trump’s team to position itself as the only political force in the US capable of achieving peace with Moscow. At the same time, Medvedev’s statements continue to demonstrate the escalatory nature of Russian rhetoric, even in response to attempts at diplomatic pressure.

At the time of publication, the Kremlin had not officially commented on Kellogg’s statement.
