European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a new €6.1 billion defence support package for Ukraine on Independence Day. The funds will be directed to air defence systems, missiles, ammunition and radars.
Ursula von der Leyen announced this on X.
“On Ukraine’s Independence Day, we express our unwavering support. Europe is with you today, tomorrow and for as long as it takes,” the European Commission president wrote.
As a reminder, the day before, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said that on Independence Day foreign partners would announce new bilateral aid packages. According to him, the allies had heard Ukraine’s request regarding the need for missiles for Patriot air defence systems.
On August 23, the leaders of Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania and Norway arrived in Kyiv. Former US presidential special envoy Keith Kellogg and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul also arrived in the Ukrainian capital.
On August 24, they were joined by the President of the European Council, the prime ministers of the United Kingdom and Luxembourg, and the presidents of Moldova and Estonia.
