Two people injured during a knife attack at a monastery in the Polish city of Jarosław are in serious condition. The prosecutor’s office has also provided new details about the detained Ukrainian citizen and the circumstances of the attack.

According to prosecutors, a 31-year-old Ukrainian citizen attacked a total of five people on the monastery grounds. One person died and four others were injured.
Two of the most seriously wounded victims are being treated at the Medical Care Center in Jarosław. According to prosecutor Bożena Harasz-Wołoszyn, the condition of one of them is stable, while the other victim remains in more serious condition.
Two other injured people were taken to hospitals in Przeworsk and Przemyśl.
The prosecutor’s office said that among the five victims were three members of the clergy and two civilians — a man and a woman.
What is known about the suspect
The man detained after the attack is a Ukrainian citizen. After receiving medical treatment in the emergency department, he was taken to the District Police Headquarters in Jarosław.
The attacker himself was injured during the incident, including a hand injury. A breathalyzer test showed 0.0 promille, while blood samples were taken for further analysis for the presence of narcotic substances.
According to investigators, the man arrived in Poland from Germany during the night and was traveling by car toward the Korczowa border crossing. He likely did not cross the border because the crossing was temporarily closed, after which he went to Jarosław for unknown reasons.
Knife may have been taken from monastery kitchen
Investigators determined that the weapon used in the attack was a knife that the suspect likely took from the monastery kitchen.
At this stage, law enforcement officials have not established the motive behind his actions.
The decision to question the suspect and carry out further procedural steps depends on doctors’ assessments of his health condition.
The investigation at the scene is being conducted by prosecutors from the District Prosecutor’s Office in Jarosław.
