Azerbaijan is bringing home 19 of its citizens who were crew members of vessels damaged in drone attacks in the Sea of Azov on June 5. During search and rescue operations, the bodies of two citizens of the country were also found.
This was stated in a statement by the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry.
On June 5, the ministry said that cargo vessels carrying 25 Azerbaijani citizens on board came under a drone attack in the Sea of Azov. The vessels themselves were not connected to Azerbaijan.
As a result of the attack, four people were killed and four others were injured. During the search and rescue operation, the bodies of two more Azerbaijani citizens were also discovered.
The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry also urged its citizens not to participate in armed conflicts on the territory of foreign states and to refrain from travelling to combat zones.
“In the current international security environment, the further increase in tensions and the ongoing armed conflicts in various regions, including Ukraine and the Middle East, continue to pose a serious threat to international peace and security. Sadly, there are cases of Azerbaijani citizens in such regions being killed or suffering injuries of varying severity as a result of armed clashes and military operations,” the ministry said in its statement.
It should be recalled that on June 5, Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces reported strikes on five Russian cargo vessels which, according to them, were being used to support Russian occupation forces. The strikes reportedly targeted vessels in the Sea of Azov near the temporarily occupied cities of Berdiansk, Yalta settlement, and Mariupol.
