Most Ukrainians do not believe that current negotiations will lead to lasting peace. At the same time, a majority also oppose handing Donbas over to Russia even in exchange for security guarantees. These are the findings of a survey by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology.

According to the study, 71% of respondents do not believe in the success of peace talks, while 25% think they could lead to lasting peace.

Regarding a possible compromise, 62% of Ukrainians are категорically opposed to transferring the entire Donetsk region under Russian control in exchange for security guarantees from the United States and Europe. Meanwhile, 33% are willing to accept such a concession, although most consider it difficult.

The survey also showed a decline in the population’s willingness to endure the war over a long period.

As of March 2026, 54% of Ukrainians said they are ready to endure the war as long as necessary. At the same time, 28% are willing to endure it only for several months or up to half a year.

KIIS notes that compared to the end of January, the share of those willing to endure the war without limits has decreased.

The survey was conducted on March 1–8 using telephone interviews among 1,003 respondents in government-controlled areas of Ukraine.
