On October 19, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a phone call with Pope Leo XIV, during which they discussed Russian strikes, the situation in temporarily occupied Oleshky and security challenges. The Vatican said the Pope had earlier appealed to the Russian president for a humanitarian ceasefire that would allow aid to reach civilians and enable their voluntary and safe evacuation.

The conversation was reported by Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Vatican News.

Zelenskyy wished Pope Leo XIV a full and speedy recovery after surgery and thanked him for his support for Ukraine.

The president briefed the pontiff on Russia’s escalation and its continued strikes on Ukrainian cities and communities.

They also discussed the situation in Oleshky

One of the main topics of the conversation was the humanitarian situation in temporarily occupied Oleshky in the Kherson region.

“We are working to help our people there. We are preparing solutions. His Holiness informed me about contacts with the Russian side on this issue,” Zelenskyy said.

The Holy See Press Office clarified that Pope Leo XIV recalled the grave situation in Oleshky and his request to the Russian president for a humanitarian ceasefire.

The pontiff expressed hope that cooperation between the parties would allow food and medical aid to reach civilians and ensure their voluntary and safe evacuation.

The Pope also reaffirmed the Holy See’s commitment to promoting dialogue and peace.

Zelenskyy raises problems with warnings of ballistic attacks

During the conversation, the Ukrainian president also raised security concerns.

According to Zelenskyy, there have recently been three instances in which Ukraine did not receive warnings from partners about Russian ballistic missile attacks.

“I am grateful to His Holiness for his support and all efforts toward achieving a just peace,” the president said.
