On the night of 27 April, Ukraine faced one of the largest drone attacks in recent times: Russia launched 149 drones from the Kursk, Bryansk, Orel and Primorsko-Akhtarsk regions.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces used aircraft, anti-aircraft missile units, mobile fire groups and electronic warfare systems to repel the attack. As of 9:00 a.m., 57 Shahed-type attack drones were confirmed shot down in the east, north, south and centre of the country.
Another 67 enemy drones, presumably used as decoys to distract Ukrainian air defence forces, were lost by the enemy without causing any damage.
Despite the significant successes of Ukrainian defenders, the enemy attack was not without consequences. The Zhytomyr, Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, Donetsk, Sumy and Cherkasy regions were affected.
The scale and complexity of the night attack demonstrate Russia’s desire to exhaust the Ukrainian air defence system. At the same time, Ukraine continues to call on its partners to increase the supply of air defence equipment to protect the population and critical infrastructure.
