“Ukrainians were here, Ukrainians are here, Ukrainians will be here. And life always wins on this land, values and our character prevail,” Zelenskyy wrote.

The holiday was introduced by Presidential Decree No. 423/2021 of August 24, 2021. The initiative to establish the Day of Ukrainian Statehood was first publicly voiced in February 2018, in particular by Hero of Ukraine Levko Lukianenko, Presidents Leonid Kravchuk, Leonid Kuchma, Viktor Yushchenko and other statesmen and public figures.

In 2023, the Verkhovna Rada, at the suggestion of the president, decided to move the celebration from July 28 to July 15, taking into account the calendar reform and the transfer of the church holiday of Prince Volodymyr. The law was supported by 241 deputies, and on July 28, Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed the corresponding decree.
