Elina Svitolina and Marta Kostyuk have reached the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid.
Svitolina confidently defeated Britain’s Sonay Kartal, Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina and Greece’s Maria Sakkari on her way to this stage. Her opponent in the quarter-finals will be Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima (No. 54 in the WTA rankings), the lowest-ranked player at this stage. The tennis players first met at the 2024 Olympics, where the Ukrainian won.
Marta Kostyuk, in turn, made her way to the quarter-finals, defeating Britain’s Emma Raducanu and two ‘neutral’ opponents — Veronika Kudermetova and Anastasia Potapova. Next, she will play against world number one Aryna Sabalenka, who is competing under a neutral flag. The previous two meetings between them ended in favour of the Belarusian.
In the other quarter-final matches, four tennis players from the top 10 of the WTA rankings will take to the court: Coco Gauff will play Mirra Andreeva, and Iga Swiatek will face Madison Keys.
