The Hungarian parliament voted 139–0 to suspend the parliamentary immunity of Peter Magyar, leader of the “Tisza” party. The decision opens the way for an investigation into him over allegations of theft.

The incident that could lead to criminal proceedings took place after the 2024 European Parliament elections. According to the publication, in the early hours of June 21, Peter Magyar got into an argument at the Ötkert nightclub in Budapest with a man who was recording him on video.
According to the allegations, during the confrontation Magyar took the phone from the man’s hands and later threw it into the Danube River. The device was later recovered from the water with the help of divers.
In September 2024, the Hungarian Prosecutor General’s Office asked the European Parliament to lift Magyar’s parliamentary immunity. However, the European Parliament did not approve the request, after which the Central Investigative Prosecutor’s Office closed the case.
After Magyar became a member of the Hungarian parliament in May, the investigation was reopened. This time, prosecutors asked the Hungarian parliament to suspend his immunity.
Magyar himself called on members of his own parliamentary faction to support the lifting of his immunity. He said he had not committed a crime and added that he would do the same thing again under the same circumstances.
