In the state election in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) came first with 38.2% of the vote, according to preliminary results. The party also won 22 of the 36 direct mandates, while the remaining 14 went to the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD).

Five years ago, AfD won in only one constituency. At that time, the SPD secured 34 direct mandates and the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) one.
AfD lead candidate Enrico Schult again won in his constituency, receiving 54.1% of the vote. Former AfD parliamentary group leader Nikolaus Kramer also secured a direct mandate with 51.2%.
The SPD of Minister-President Manuela Schwesig received 35.5% of the vote. In 2021, the party won 39.6%.
Schwesig herself won the direct mandate in the Schwerin I constituency with 54.4%. Her AfD rival Leif-Erik Holm received 28.2%.
The CDU won 4.9% and failed to clear the 5% threshold. It is the first time the party has failed to enter a state parliament in one of Germany’s federal states. In 2021, the CDU received 13.3% in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
The Left received 6.5%, the Greens 5.7%, the left-populist Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance 4.8%, and the Free Democratic Party (FDP) 1%. According to the preliminary seat distribution, AfD will have 32 seats, the SPD 29, while the Left and the Greens will have five each.
The SPD will not be able to continue its coalition with the Left alone. Based on the election result, the SPD, the Left and the Greens together have a mathematical majority.
